Myths and Facts Of Wearing A Mask In A Pandemic

One of the things that we learned in 2020 was to develop a new habit of wearing a mask in public. Despite various public service announcements in the form of billboards, tv advertisements, and caller tune warnings, there still exists a lot of misinformation around masks and COVID-19. So, here’s a breakdown of all of the myths and the true facts that lie behind them.

Myth: You should only wear a mask if you’re feeling sick.
Fact: With the multiple rounds of information that have surfaced with regard to coronavirus, according to ICMR or Indian Council Of Medical Research, many people are asymptomatic and show no symptoms of the disease. Even if you’re not showing any symptoms, you may have the disease and might be unknowingly spreading it to other people as well, including people with underlying co-morbidities. A comorbidity refers to the presence of one or more additional conditions often co-occurring with a primary condition. In COVID-19’s case, conditions like pregnancy, cancers, heart and lung disease prove to be comorbidities that can certainly make the risk and infection of coronavirus a lot worse than it is for other people. This is perhaps why it is mandatory to wear a mask even inside a car in the state capital, New Delhi among other places.Myth: Inside your house, you don’t need to wear a mask.
Fact: While this is true if you are living alone, it is subject to change if you’re living with someone who is showing symptoms of COVID-19 or feeling sick in general. Mild symptoms of COVID-19 include dry cough, tiredness, body ache, fever, sore throat, diarrhea, conjunctivitis, headache, loss of taste or smell, and a rash on the skin, or discolouration of fingers or toes. If you or someone at your place starts to experience any of the symptoms you should immediately do two things. One, start wearing a mask around them and inside the house, second to consult a doctor to rule out COVID-19 as soon as possible. Without a test, one can never be sure if you or the people living with you have been affected with coronavirus especially if any of you are showing symptoms.

Myth: If you’ve had coronavirus, you don’t need a mask when you step out.

Fact: If you’ve had a coronavirus this year or had an antibody test that came positive, it does not automatically mean that you don’t need a mask anymore. Since COVID-19 is only a year old since its official discovery in China last year in December of 2019, there’s very less medical information that we’re aware of. Presently,  there is no way to know whether having dealt with coronavirus provides immunity from the disease or even for how long this said immunity lasts. This means that if you don’t wear a mask, you can catch the disease again and spread it or simply become a carrier for others. Now, that you have clarity on masks, you can choose the Hi Life Multi-Layered Protective Mask that comes with not one but 5 layers of protection against smog, pollen, dust, pollution, and most importantly COVID-19.
